10 David Ogilvy Quotes that Could Revolutionize Your Blogging
Filed Under: Featured Posts, Writing Content 106 Comments

This week, I’ve been reading The King of Madison Avenue—an interesting biography of ad man David Ogilvy (aff).
I’ve always been fascinated with Ogilvy and see a lot in what he’s done as relevant to bloggers. So here’s some of his more famous quotes, with a few thoughts on how they relate to our medium.
1. “The consumer isn’t a moron; she is your wife.”

How appropriate—both for internet marketers (who are often known for tactics that treat those they target as morons) and bloggers (who can at times talk down to readers).
The idea of treating your reader as someone who you value, as someone incredibly special to you, will take bloggers a long way.
Another Ogilvy quote that relates: “Never write an advertisement which you wouldn’t want your family to read. You wouldn’t tell lies to your own wife. Don’t tell them to mine.”
2. “The best ideas come as jokes. Make your thinking as funny as possible.”

I’ve been pondering this one a lot over the last 24 hours and it’s true—some of my best blog posts and projects have emerged out of light-hearted tweets or comments in conversations to friends.
31 Days to Build a Better Blog came about as I laughed with a friend about how bloggers needed a daily devotion (similar to what I grew up with as a good Christian boy reading Every day with Jesus) to keep their blogs on track.
7 Digital Camera Predators and How to Keep them at Bay started as a friend and I joked about things that conspired to kill our cameras.
It’s often the crazy little ideas that we have that first make us laugh that do best. If they get some kind of reaction in us (even one that makes us giggle at how silly they are), they’re likely to also get a reaction from others.
3. “Don’t bunt. Aim out of the ball park. Aim for the company of immortals.”

Think big! While there’s also something to be said for having realistic expectations about what you can achieve with a blog, there’s nothing wrong with having big dreams and aiming to make them a reality.
It can be a bit of a balancing act, but if you aim a little higher you might just find yourself achieving things with your blog that you might not have thought possible.
4. “I have a theory that the best ads come from personal experience. Some of the good ones I have done have really come out of the real experience of my life, and somehow this has come over as true and valid and persuasive.”

If there’s one quote in this selection that most rings true for me it is this one. The posts that I’ve written that have emerged out of real experience, pain, excitement, heartache, and life are the ones that time and time again hit the mark with readers.
Tell stories, share your successes and failures, be yourself, and let your own personal voice come out. You’ll find readers respond in a personal way, too.
5. “I don’t know the rules of grammar… If you’re trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language they use every day, the language in which they think. We try to write in the vernacular.”

This might get up the noses of those of you who are a little more particular about grammar (and I do thank you for your continued daily emails pointing out my mistakes), but I think there’s something powerful about this.
Write your blog posts in the way that you’d actually speak to them if they were in the chair opposite you. Use language that communicates most clearly with them—even when it might not be the Queen’s English.
Of course there comes a point where grammar and spelling errors can and do get in the way of communicating clearly with readers. Don’t be lazy—the point is to know your readers and communicate in a way that’s relevant to them.
6. “Good copy can’t be written with tongue in cheek, written just for a living. You’ve got to believe in the product.”

I’m not sure I agree 100% with this as I do know bloggers who make good livings from writing about things that they have no real interest in or passion for. However, most successful blogs (and by that I mean more than profit, and am looking at blogs that connect with readers and help build a blogger’s reputation) are written by people who have something genuine to say about a topic they believe in.
While it’s possible to create a profitable blog on something you have no interest or belief in (by gaming the search engines for example), those kinds of blogs are never going to create a connection with readers or do much to raise your profile in an industry.
Conversely, bloggers who create blogs that come from genuine interest and passion for topics create connections with readers that have flow-on effects that lead to all kinds of wonderful opportunities.
7. “If you ever have the good fortune to create a great advertising campaign, you will soon see another agency steal it. This is irritating, but don’t let it worry you; nobody has ever built a brand by imitating somebody else’s advertising.”

There’s nothing more heartbreaking for a new blogger when you see your content being scraped onto another blog or your intellectual property being used by others without credit.
I still get upset by this from time to time, however there’s one thing that I’ve noticed despite hundreds of sites each day republishing my work without permission and/or credit. Nobody actually seems to read those blogs.
The key to successful blogging is unique and useful information. People who simply regurgitate what you write, or even repost it word for word, either eventually give up (because nobody reads it) or get caught out (and stop in disgrace).
While there are times when I’ve chased down others who blatantly steal my stuff without credit (there is a line) I find it much more beneficial to spend my time creating more great content than policing how people use what I’ve already produced.
Focus the bulk of your time upon producing and being the best you can be. This will have more positive impact upon your business than the negative tasks of stopping spammers and thieves stealing your old ideas.
8. “First, make yourself a reputation for being a creative genius. Second, surround yourself with partners who are better than you are. Third, leave them to go get on with it.”

This one might be a little more appropriate for advanced bloggers who’ve established themselves and are looking to take things to the next level.
There does come a time in most businesses where a solo entrepreneur needs to think about how to expand and grow beyond their own capacity to give their business personal attention.
There are only so many hours in the day. Expanding your team and/or partnering with others is one option to consider. If you do it, look for people whose skills complement and exceed yours, then get out of their way.
9. “Never stop testing, and your advertising will never stop improving.”

David was big on testing, and his effectiveness as a communicator improved dramatically as a result.
It’s amazing what you learn when you test different elements on a blog: simple tweaks of headlines, changes in calls to action, different placements of ads, tracking how design changes improve conversion of your objectives … the list could go on.
Great bloggers don’t just write content—they watch to see how people interact with it (and their blog) and use what they learn to improve their future efforts.
10. “On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar. “

The headline or title of your blog post is the most effective way to get people to read the rest of your post. If you don’t understand—and more importantly, implement—this principle, you’re going to miss out on a lot of readers.
Headlines draw people in, whether they see them in search results, on Twitter, in RSS feeds, or on your blog itself.
Ogilvy is famous for his advice on this: the purpose of your headline is to get people to read your first line. The purpose of your opening line is to get people to read the next one. So invest time and energy into your titles (and opening lines).
Here’s a related quote: “The headline is the ‘ticket on the meat.’ Use it to flag down readers

Adsense Tips for Bloggers

Good tips from from http://www.problogger.net/

How do you make money from the Google Adsense Program? What AdSense Tips can you share with us?
I have been asked this question so many times in the past few weeks that I thought I should write something on the topic. It seems increasingly bloggers want to try to cover their hosting and ISP costs with some revenue from their blog – and increasingly they’re doing it and are able to make a few (or quite a lot) dollars on the side. Many are turning to Google’s Adsense program.
Covering costs of my Digital Photography Blog is why I originally signed up with Google Adsense – blogging can get expensive when you have high levels of traffic and a lot of pages.
Whilst the agreement you sign with Google stresses that you are not allowed to give specific information about your earnings from the program I can say that I’m glad I’ve signed up because its well and truly covered my costs – and then some. In fact I think its quite feasible to expect that Adsense coupled with other strategies for making money from Blogging could quite easily generate a decent living. It takes time and hard work, but I think its very doable. (Update: Since writing this series I’ve revealed that I am now looking at making over a six figure income this year in 2005 from blogging).
So how do I make money from Google Adsense? Let me share some AdSense Tips that heve helped me.
This will be the first in a series of posts on this topic. Let me say up front I’m no expert – there are a lot of people out there making a lot more money than I am using Adsense – however most of them are not telling their secrets – well not for free anyway. I’ve got no secrets to hide and am willing to share what I’ve learnt since I signed up for the program 8 months ago. If you want a REAL expert’s opinion on Adsense I’d recommend buying Joel Comm’s What Google Never Told You About Making Money with Adsense E-Book. Joel earns $15,000 per month from Adsense and has some good things to share.
I know some bloggers are put off or offended by the idea of making money from blogging so I’ll try not to let these posts dominate my blog – however if you are not interested in the topic, simply skip over these posts.

I am going to assume a few things in this series to cut down the amount of introductory comments I have to make. Here is what I am assuming:
You have a blog. Whilst most of the following tips will apply to other types of websites I run Adsense on blogs and will speak from that experience.
You have (or will) read a basic overview of Adsense and have some understanding of what it is.
You have(or will) read the program policies as outlined by Google. These give details of site eligibility, ad placements and other requirements for using the system.

Youi Car Insurance

Youi is a really good car insurance brand. What they do in terms of their marketing is brilliant too. They keep the consistency in the way how they communicate to their target segment at the same time they are nailing down their marketing ROI (I think...)
Here you go, go and check out.... their words (from youi.com.au)
Car insurance with a difference

Some car insurance companies make a lot of assumptions about you and your car usage. At Youi we don’t assume, we ask. We feel it’s important to understand you and how you use your car, so you only pay for car insurance that you need.

We believe the more we know, the fewer assumptions we need to make, the more accurate your car insurance premium will be, and therefore the more you should save. For example, if during the week you use your car less, or park in a secure area, you should pay less for your car insurance. Or if you’re a pilot, a stay at home parent, a retiree, or work from home and generally use your car less, you should also pay less for your car insurance. We believe fewer assumptions means a better understanding of you that should equate to lower car insurance premiums.

We’ve also made managing your car insurance simple. You can either contact our highly trained contact centre staff or manage your car insurance policy online yourself with our unique Youi Car Insurance Online Policy Manager. It puts your car insurance policy in your hands. 24/7. You can add, remove, renew, amend or request to cancel your policy without speaking to anyone.

Youi stands for You.Insured. It’s a smarter way of doing car insurance that could save you lots of money.

Home insurance with a difference

Unlike Youi Home and Contents Insurance, most Home and Contents insurance companies make a lot of assumptions about your house, where you live and your contents. At Youi Home and Contents Insurance we believe you’re all different, living differently, with different styles and tastes. That’s why we ask you more questions. Because the more questions we ask the fewer assumptions we have to make, the more tailor made your home and contents premium will be. It’s a smarter way of doing home and contents insurance that could save you lots of money.

Go ahead, do a Youi Home and Contents quote online or call our highly trained contact centre staff and see how much you could save.

Your Youi Home and Contents policy is yours to manage with our easy to use Online Policy Manager. You can view, change, add, remove, save, download, track, cancel and claim without speaking to anyone. However we do have helpful contact centre staff available to speak to if you so wish.

Youi is short for ‘you insured’, because at Youi Home and Contents Insurance we put you at the centre of everything we do.

Credit Card Advice AU

1. My son wants me to go guarantor for his car loan. I am struggling financially, but he assured me that the dealer would not offer the loan if he believed my son would not be able to repay the loan?
Be very careful! You should not at all assume that the dealer necessarily believes your son can repay the loan. Under the Consumer Credit Code you must have a copy of the credit contract. Take these documents to a professional adviser (e.g. qualified lawyer). Remember, you may very well have to repay the amount of the loan (often all that is owed under the contract) if the borrower defaults on the loan. There can be other charges as well.

2. What is the Consumer Credit Code and how does it protect me?
This is a national code that is applicable in each State. Despite what its title suggests, it is not a code of conduct but legislation that is enforceable in certain situations where credit is offered. Any non-business credit transactions are governed by the Code. Credit providers such as banks, building societies, credit unions, finance companies and businesses, have to tell you what your rights and obligations are in any credit arrangement, including interest rates, fees, and commissions.

3. My uncle loaned me money to be repaid over five years. Since he is charging me interest, I assume it is covered by the Consumer Credit Code?
No, it is not, because your uncles business is not to provide credit it is a personal loan.

4. My bank account went into debit is that credit under the Consumer Credit Code?
No, that sort of situation is specifically excluded under the Consumer Credit Code.

5. Can I pull out of my obligation to be a guarantor?
In some circumstances the Consumer Credit Code allows a guarantor to withdraw from the contract as guarantor. This can take place before the credit has been provided, or if there is a material difference between the contract and pre-contract statements or the offered contract. Get legal advice.

6. Can the interest rate in my credit contract be changed?
It can be changed if the contract allows for it. It would be worth getting professional advice to determine if the change is valid.

7. We were not really honest in our credit application, and the credit company found this out, but they have not given us the notice under the Consumer Credit Code to repay the loan. Is that right?
They may in fact be entitled to take this action because you were fraudulent. Get legal advice immediately.

8. I bought a car on credit, regulated by the Consumer Credit Code. I lost my job and cant keep up the payments. Should I do anything before they repossess?
Repossession can take place under the Consumer Credit Code following the expiry of the appropriate notice period. It would be a good idea to get the car valued, and to take photos/video to document its condition. This is because the credit provider will make a determination of the value of the car following repossession.

9. My son entered into a contract regulated by the Consumer Credit Code, but I think he was conned into it and had little idea of what was going on. What can he do?
He should get legal advice in some States he may be able to get free advice from a Consumer Credit Legal Service. It is sometimes possible to get a contract declared unjust by a court if there was an unequal bargaining power at the time it was entered into.

10. How carefully should I read the credit contract before I sign it?
Very carefully! If you dont understand it, or it is not properly explained, get professional advice. Better safe than sorry.

Credit CardsFRIDAY, APRIL 2, 20103 Basic Types of Auto Insurance CoverageHere are the three basic types of auto insurance coverage: liability coverage, physical damage coverage, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

Acquiring a car insurance policy is a must. It would be unwise to buy and drive a car without any insurance. Having an auto insurance protects you, your vehicle, properties, and third parties should accidents arise. A comprehensive type of auto insurance policy is quite expensive but it is capable of covering all types of damages, accidents and theft. A third party policy is more affordable, but, it can only cover repair cost on a third party's vehicle where the fault has been proven to be on your part. Every insurance policy has different coverage types. Coverage type would refer to the kind of protection as well as the extent to which an insurance policy will cover in the event of any damage or loss. Here are the three basic types:

Liability coverage type

Liability coverage can either be a bodily injury liability or a property damage liability. A bodily injury liability is a type of coverage that covers for the injuries and death of other people's body that are under your responsibility. Should there be any lawsuit against you due to an accident, this type of liability coverage will provide you with a legal defense. However, this type of coverage does not cover you. The other type of liability coverage, which is the property damage liability, covers the damages arising from accidents that you cause. Among the possible coverage would be the damage inflicted on other people's car, house, fence and other properties.

Physical damage coverage type

This type of coverage has two kinds: the comprehensive coverage other than collision; and, the collision coverage. A comprehensive coverage other than collision is designed to cover your vehicle for any damage except that is caused by collision. Damages that are covered would be those arising from theft, as well as damages caused by animals, fire and even flood. Another kind of physical damage coverage is a collision coverage. This covers damages to your car due to a collision. Collision covered under this insurance would include these two circumstances - either your car was hit or you hit another vehicle or any other object.

Underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage type

This coverage encompasses four kinds: the uninsured motorist coverage; the underinsured motorist coverage; uninsured motorist property damage; and, the underinsured motorist property damage. The uninsured motorist coverage covers you, your household members who are insured, and the passengers that you have for any damages, injuries or even death that have been caused by a hit-and-run or an uninsured driver. An underinsured motorist bodily injury also covers you, your insured members of the household, passengers if there are any, during an accident causing damage, loss, or injury which has been on the fault of another party whose insurance is not sufficient to cover for all necessary expenses. The third kind, which is the uninsured motorist property damage, covers your car should there be any property damage that an insured is undergoing and the one operating or driving the car is not an insurance holder. Lastly, the underinsured motorist property damage is capable of covering the property damage that an insured is sustaining, and the operator of the vehicle happens to have an insurance too.

Looking at the different coverage types, you would surely come to a point of realizing the value of a car insurance. But, before jumping into any of these insurance types, it is advisable for you to scout for auto insurance companies and ask for free auto insurance quotes to enable you to compare prices. This will save you time and money.[Image]Posted by Admin at 9:12 AMLabels: auto insuranceLinks to this postCreate a LinkNewer PostOlder PostHomeMY BLOG LISTSILVER SHORTAGEDavid Morgan - Korelin Interview - Aug 2010 - Seduced by *silver* at the tender age of 11, David Morgan started investing in the stock market while still a teenager. All new Visa credit cards to be Chip and Pin in Australia

Credit card giant Visa has announced that as of January of next year all new credit cards issued in Australia will be Chip and Pin, with the company planning to phase out signature plastic altogether by 2013.
It has been announced by the credit card giant Visa that from January of next year all new credit cards issued in Australia will be Chip and Pin cards. The company has also announced that it plans to migrate all plastic cards to Chip and Pin by 2013 in a bid to try and reduce credit card fraud in the country.

Visa has set deadlines to meet different goals in order to ensure that all plastic cards are Chip and Pin cards by April of 2013. From January all new credit cards will be Chip and Pin cards, and from early 2011 debit cards and pre-paid plastic cards will be updated. By April of 2012 Merchant POS terminals across Australia will need to accept Chip and Pin cards, and ATM machines are to be updated in 2011.
If all this goes to plan around fourteen million plastic cards, thousands of ATM machines, and half a million POS payment terminals will have migrated in order to phase out signature plastic and reduce fraud through Chip and Pin payments.
Officials believe that migrating credit cards and other plastic cards from signature cards to Chip and Pin cards will help to reduce credit card fraud levels, and this method has proven successful in other countries in terms of some transactions. However, Chip and Pin has led to increased CNP or Card Not Present credit card crime, where the card does not actually have to be present for the transaction to be carried out, such as with online, telephone, and mail order transactions.
